FAQs

Directional
Boring

What is directional boring, and how does it work?

Directional boring (also called horizontal directional drilling or HDD) is a trenchless method of installing underground utilities with minimal surface disruption. A drill is used to create a pilot hole, and then a reamer is used to enlarge the hole to accommodate the utility pipe or conduit.

What are the benefits of directional boring compared to traditional trenching?

Directional boring minimizes surface disruption, reduces restoration costs, allows for utility installations under roads, rivers, or landscaping, and is often faster and more cost-effective than open-cut trenching.

What types of utilities can be installed using directional boring?

We can install water lines, sewer lines, electrical conduit, fiber optic cables, gas lines, and more.

What can we directional bore under?

We drill under most things like roads, driveways, (some) buildings, RR crossings, rivers, creeks, ponds, and more.

What size and type of pipes can you install with directional boring?

We can bore and install pipes from half inch up to 20 inches in diameter, depending on soil conditions, depth, and project scope. Our equipment handles everything from small residential utilities to large commercial and industrial lines, and we’ll help determine the best boring method for your job.

Do we provide auger boring services?

No.

Are there any limitations to directional boring?

Directional boring is effective in most soils, including sandy, loam, and clay. However, rocky terrain or areas with unknown underground obstructions may require specialized tools and can extend project timelines. Soil type plays a significant role, which is why our team conducts a thorough site assessment to evaluate ground conditions and recommend the safest, most efficient plan for your project.

How long does a typical directional boring project take?

Project timelines vary based on length, depth, and soil conditions. Small residential projects may take a day, while larger commercial projects can take several weeks.

Do I need a permit for utility or excavation work?

Yes, permits are typically required for most directional boring and excavation projects. The good news is that we handle the permitting process for you. Our team works directly with local municipalities and utility companies to secure the necessary approvals, ensuring your project stays compliant and moves forward without delays.

FAQs

Utility
Locating

Why is utility locating important before excavation?

Locating utilities before excavation prevents accidental damage to underground infrastructure, which can lead to costly repairs, service outages, and safety hazards.

How does the utility locating process work?

We use specialized equipment to detect underground utilities, including electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar. Our technicians then mark the locations on the ground to guide excavation work.

Do you provide private utility locating or just public utilities?

We provide both! 811 services only locate public utilities, but we can locate private lines such as water, sewer, gas, electric, and telecommunications on private property.

What technology do you use for locating underground utilities?

We use electromagnetic locating equipment, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and other advanced methods to detect underground utilities accurately.

Can you detect all types of underground utilities?

Most utilities can be located, but some older or abandoned lines may be more difficult to detect. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology is very effective in soils like loam, sand, and rock. It isn’t as effective in dense soils like clay. If needed, we offer additional methods such as potholing to confirm utility locations.

How accurate are utility locating services?

Our equipment and trained technicians provide highly accurate results, but environmental factors like soil conditions can affect precision. We always recommend cautious excavation practices.

Can we scan for grave sites/vaults?

Yes.

Do I still need to call 811 if I hire your utility locating services?

Yes, calling 811 is legally required for locating public utilities before excavation. Our private locating services complement 811 by identifying non-public utility lines on your property.

FAQs

Excavation
& Safety

What types of excavation services do you offer?

We provide trenching general excavation services for installing, repairing, or replacing underground utilities.

How do you ensure safety during excavation projects?

Safety is our top priority. We follow OSHA regulations, conduct pre-dig inspections, and use proper protective systems such as trench boxes when necessary.

What precautions do you take to avoid damaging underground utilities?

Safety is our top priority on every project. Before any digging or directional boring begins, we use advanced utility locating methods, including ground penetrating radar (GPR), to identify what’s underground. Our trained crews follow strict safety protocols to minimize risk, protect existing utilities, and keep your project compliant and on schedule.

Are your crews trained and certified for safe excavation practices?

Yes, our team undergoes regular safety training and is certified in OSHA excavation standards with OSHA10/30 certifications.

What if an underground utility is damaged during work?

Our utility locating and safety processes are designed to prevent damage, and we have a strong track record of completing projects without incident. However, unexpected site conditions can sometimes cause issues. In the rare event that a utility line is hit, our team responds immediately, coordinates with the utility provider, and resolves the situation quickly, safely, and in full compliance with regulations.

FAQs

Project
Timelines & Pricing

How long does a typical underground utility project take?

Timelines vary based on project size, soil conditions, permitting, and weather. Smaller residential jobs may only take a day or two, while larger commercial or industrial projects can extend several weeks. Before work begins, our team will provide a clear schedule so you know what to expect. With years of experience, we focus on efficiency without cutting corners to keep your project on track.

How is pricing determined for your services?

Pricing depends on project scope, depth, soil type, permits, and materials. We provide estimates based on your specific needs. Arkansas especially has a large range of soil conditions even within the same city. We consider every variable to quote your project competitively.

Are there additional costs if unexpected underground obstructions are found?

If unforeseen obstacles arise, we will discuss solutions and any potential cost adjustments before proceeding.

Do you offer warranties or guarantees on your work?

Yes. We stand behind our workmanship and guarantee the quality of our installations. If an issue arises due to our work, we’ll return promptly to make it right. Our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction means you can trust your project is built to last.

Do you provide restoration after excavation or boring?

Yes. Once the job is complete, we make every effort to restore the site to its original condition. This may include backfilling, compacting, grading, and cleaning the work area. Our goal is to leave your property safe, stable, and ready for use once the utility work is finished. We treat every site with respect and work to minimize disruption from start to finish.
