What is directional boring, and how does it work?

Directional boring, also known as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), is a trenchless method for installing underground utilities with minimal surface disruption. A drill creates a pilot hole, then a reamer enlarges it to fit the utility pipe or conduit.

What are the benefits of directional boring?

Directional boring reduces surface damage, minimizes restoration costs, and allows installation under roads, rivers, and landscaping. It’s often faster and more cost-effective than open-cut trenching.

What types of utilities can be installed using directional boring?

We can install water lines, sewer lines, electrical conduits, fiber optic cables, and gas lines using directional boring.

Why is utility locating important before excavation?

Locating utilities before excavation prevents accidental damage that could cause costly repairs, safety hazards, or service outages.

Do you provide private utility locating or just public utilities?

We provide both. 811 services locate public utilities, but we also locate private lines—such as water, sewer, gas, and electric—on private property.

Can you detect all types of underground utilities?

Most utilities can be accurately detected using electromagnetic locating equipment and ground-penetrating radar (GPR). Some older or abandoned lines may require extra verification methods like potholing.

What types of excavation services do you offer?

We provide trenching and general excavation for installing, repairing, or replacing underground utilities, following strict OSHA safety standards.

How do you ensure safety during excavation projects?

Safety is our top priority. We follow OSHA regulations, perform pre-dig inspections, and use trench boxes and protective systems when needed.

Est. 1979

Randy Carter Construction began in 1979 in Benton, Arkansas by Randy and Lana Carter. What began as a part-time trenching business grew to a full-time dedicated team serving Little Rock and the surrounding areas in all of their construction and utility needs.

Back in the day, the only advice that Randy’s Dad gave him about owning a business was “Do a good job for someone and they will tell a few people. Do someone a poor job and they will tell many.” At Randy Carter Construction, our most important asset is our people.
